MUNCIE — Ball State University is buying two deserted elementary school buildings for $435,000.

The university has agreed to acquire Mitchell Elementary on the northwest side and Sutton Elementary on the southeast side. Both were closed last year to reduce the budget deficit at Muncie Community Schools.

"Regarding the closing, it is just a matter of getting the final documents completed," said Steve Edwards, head of the state-appointed emergency management firm operating the school district.

"The (sale of the) properties will formally close today," BSU spokesperson Kathy Wolf told The Star Press on Friday. "There are no immediate firm plans for their use."

Edwards also confirmed on Friday that the school district had sold 11 acres of undeveloped land at the southeast corner of Tillotson Avenue and Cornbread Road — near the former Wilson Middle School — to the Muncie Redevelopment Commission for $73,600.
