WINCHESTER — Randolph County and Winchester will celebrate an anniversary worthy of a year-long party.

The county and county seat will mark their bicentennials – that's 200 years – with a birthday party, festival, a new plaza on the courthouse lawn and other events.

"How cool is it that both the city and county turn 200 at the same time?" said Winchester Mayor Shon Byrum. "In today's world, there's so much negativity, there's so much strife, ... we don't celebrate enough of the positive things that happen. It's a reason to come together as a community and learn more about each other. Maybe create new relationships. ... We are celebrating a common cause."

The bicentennial celebration began Saturday with a semiformal Bicentennial Gala in the Towne Square Community Center.
