IU athletics employees among highest paid at university in 2017-18

Michael Reschke, Herald-Times

For the first time since being hired in 2009, Fred Glass will receive the largest base salary of any Indiana University athletics department employee.

According to recently released base salary figures for IU, the athletics director will be paid $561,000 in fiscal year 2018, which is the time period beginning July 1, 2017, and ending June 30, 2018. That puts him $11,000 above new head men's basketball coach Archie Miller as well as $61,000 above both head football coach Tom Allen and associate head football coach Mike DeBord. IU President Michael McRobbie earns the largest base salary, at $627,300.

Glass received a base salary of $410,000 when he first came to IU, which was about $190,000 less than what then-head men's basketball coach Tom Crean was making at the time. But Crean's total compensation was about $2 million when Glass was hired.

Coaches and top administrators often make much more than their base salaries because of performance incentives and other bonuses. For instance, McRobbie received a base salary of $600,000 in 2016, but his total compensation that year exceeded $1 million thanks to additions such as a $150,000 bonus and $287,000 in deferred compensation. Miller is expected to average about $3.35 million a year with outside promotional income that covers additional responsibilities such as public appearances and media communications.
